Don't Stop Watering Your Trees & Lawn
By Taylor's Way | Dec 10, 2018 | Blog
Just because the Illinois Valley received three to seven inches of rain doesn't mean you should stop watering. Summer is here, and your trees and lawn still need your attention.
A Message from Our Arborist in Ottawa
With the forecast ahead and the stress that all the trees have gone through to date, our arborist in Ottawa says we really need to stay up on watering our trees and lawns. Don't let a rainy week lull you into a false sense of security — consistent watering makes all the difference.
How to Water Your Trees
Newly Planted Trees
Water two to three times a week with a slow trickle. A five-gallon bucket works great for delivering a deep, steady soak directly to the root zone.
Mature Trees
A slow trickle or sprinkler placed around the base of your large trees can make a big difference, especially during periods of heat and drought stress.
Best Practices for Watering Your Lawn
Water in the Morning or Evening
The best time to water your lawn is early morning or late evening. This ensures the grass absorbs moisture without risk of burning or rapid evaporation from the midday sun.
Cool Down Soil Temperature
High soil temperatures promote fungal activity. Watering cools the soil, relieving stress on grass while preventing fungus from infesting the turf.

Watch Out for Tree Diseases This Year
This is one of the worst years we've seen for outbreaks of fungus, bacteria, and other tree diseases. You may be noticing browning leaves on ornamental pears, crab apples, maples, and even oaks.
Fungal Issues
Fungal outbreaks are common during periods of fluctuating moisture. Look for browning, spots, or unusual discoloration on leaves.
Abiotic Stress
Drought, too much rain, too little rain, and construction damage are all environmental stressors that can cause symptoms similar to disease.
Bacterial Disease
Bacterial infections can spread quickly. If you notice unusual symptoms on multiple trees, don't wait — call our office for guidance.
